Rao is regarded as the foremost specilaist in modern CQB training. His methodology was used by various Indian Forces to help in their modernization of CQB training for Counter Terror & Commando Operations. Starting as a Guest Trainer, he trained about 20,000 soldiers from elite forces including Para Special Forces, Naval MARCOS, IAF GARUD, Commando Wing, National Security Guard Black Cat, Special Frontier Force, ITBP and 12 State & City Police Anti-Terror Units for 20 years without charging a single rupee as compensation. He also invented a new method of reflex shooting which gained popularity in Battle schools of Kashmir valley & Assam. His unconventional work and exemplary service got him many Army Chief appreciations. He has been guest faculty for National Police Academy, Army Officers Academy, Commando wing and National Security Guard. He has authored the Worlds first Close Op training encyclopedia which went into FBI, INTERPOL and SWAT libraries as the only Indian book on Fighting Terror. The Ministry of Defence cited in 2011 that ‘The rank honour is for outstanding contribution in modern close quarter battle training for Counter Terror with absolute dedication & commitment for over 17 years’. His wife's work was recognised by the highest National award for women in the Indian Republic, awarded by the President of India in 2019.
